In LORD OF THE RINGS: RETURN OF THE KING, we see Samwise Gamgee as Frodo Baggins’s Paraclete, and then we look at Aragorn being the film’s Christ-figure.
Paraclete: Better Than Potatoes
As we’ve progressed through the trilogy, we’ve described briefly the relationship between Frodo and Smeagol as a closely linked one. But there’s one crucial difference between the two: Frodo had a Paraclete, and Smeagol did not. And in case you didn’t know, a Paraclete is someone who is “called to one’s side” – although we translate to “helper,” “encourager,” and nominally the Holy Spirit. Samwise Gamgee as Frodo’s own Paraclete. As Frodo grows weaker and weaker under the burden of the Ring, Sam is there to help, counsel, and encourage him all the way. This is how we as Christians should revere God and regard others around us.
Return Of The King Of Kings
Of course, it wouldn’t be a Christian review of The Lord of the Rings without identifying a Christ-figure, and to complete the trifecta, we’ve chosen Aragorn as the Christ-figure in Return of the King (like you didn’t know already). Even though we have to keep in mind that Tolkien opposed allegory, it almost seems like he let Aragorn slip by the rule.
On his robe at his thigh was written this title: King of all kings and Lord of all lords. – Rev. 19:16
Finding Christ In LOTR: Return Of The King
In Finding Christ In Cinema we dig deeper into the silver-screen classics of yesteryear as well as the box-office hits of today. We take a closer look at the stories they tell and see if we find the face of Jesus looking back. Together we explore the deeper meanings of these films; their plots and their twists; the characters and their choices; and see how we can relate them to the gospel of salvation and ultimately our Christian walk.
