Christian Themes In RETURN OF THE JEDI | Finding Christ In Cinema

On this episode of Finding Christ In Cinema, we conclude our adventure into that galaxy far, far away as we look for Christian themes in STAR WARS EPISODE VI: RETURN OF THE JEDI. Is it the kindness of Luke that leads Darth Vader to repentence, giving him the way out of the Dark Side?

This image shows Luke Skywalker speaking to an unmasked, dying Darth Vader in the Return Of The Jedi.

“I’ll not leave you here. I’ve got to save you. ” “You already have, Luke.” Kindness leads to repentance in STAR WARS Return Of The Jedi.

It’s the climax of the whole original trilogy: Luke Skywalker is in the electrical clutches of the Emperor, and Darth Vader – at this time known to be Luke’s father – is standing at attention. He sees his son writhing in pain on the floor and shuffles uncomfortably in response.

The Redemption Of Darth Vader

It isn’t until Luke is on the brink of death when Vader intervenes. He picks up the Emperor, who then starts redirecting his power to Vader. Vader then throws the Emperor over the railing and into the core of the second Death Star. Vader saves his son, and the two are reconciled before Vader passes away.

This change for Vader can be traced back to when Luke first humbly surrendered himself. Luke wasn’t loud and atrocious in his surrender; instead, he was kind. That action of kindness opened Vader’s heart and led him to repentance, and he acted out that salvation by stopping the Emperor from killing Luke.

This is exactly how it works in the world of faith. We may have friends or family that need to repent of something, but if we tell them that without love, we fear that we will push them further away. What this scenario illustrates – and what the Bible is all about – is the transformative power of kindness and how it can ultimately save not only the life of the self but the life of others as well.
