Jar Jar Binks may be the most despised character in the STAR WARS universe. Why is that? Could it be that we see ourselves in Jar Jar Binks? We’ll explore that idea in this video excerpt of our Christian movie review show Finding Christ In Cinema.
Jar Jar Binks And The Human Condition
On episode two of our audio podcast, Finding Christ In Cinema, we discussed Christian themes in STAR WARS Episode I: The Phantom Menace. One one of the allegories we found was that of Jar Jar Binks as a representative of the human condition. That is, that Jar Jar was in serious need of intervention. His situation required someone to step in an alter the course he was on. His current trajectory was leading to no good! In fact, it was leading him toward destruction. He was on a collision course with an army bent on flattening anything in its way. It reminds us of events that took place in Judah which the prophet Jeremiah recorded:
Listen! Hear the terrifying roar of great armies
as they roll down from the north.
The towns of Judah will be destroyed
and become a haunt for jackals – Jeremiah 10:22 [NLT]
As Jeremiah described a scene much like the one that Jar Jar Binks found himself in, he went on to admit that he and his people were not even capable of planning their own course. The language in the King James Version puts it this way:
It is not in man that walketh to direct his steps – Jer. 10:23 [KJV]
Jar Jar Binks Needed A Saviour
Jar Jar needed somebody to save him. Someone that could step in and prevent the inevitable from happening: death. Enter Qui-Gon Jin, who saves Jar Jar Binks; alters his course from death to life; and takes Jar Jar under his care. Jar Jar owes Qui-Gon a “life-debt”. His life belongs to Qui-Gon now. And Qui-Gon will continue to defend, protect, and care for Jar Jar Binks.
That sounds exactly like the relationship between believers and Jesus. Jar Jar Binks exemplifies the human condition.

Finding Christ In Cinema
Finding Christ In Cinema is the show where we dig deep into the silver-screen classics of yesteryear as well as the box-office hits of today. We take a closer look at the stories they tell, and see if we find the face of Jesus looking back. We’ll explore the deeper meanings of these films; their plots and their twists; the characters and their choices; and how we can relate them to the gospel of salvation, and ultimately our Christian walk.
