Princess Bride is a favorite movie among many people. It is also a great way to share the Good News of salvation in Jesus by pointing viewers to the Song Of Solomon. We discuss that on this episode of Finding Christ In Cinema.
One of the primary goals of Finding Christ In Cinema is to equip listeners with tools for sharing the Good News of Jesus with friends and loved-ones. Most people like to watch movies. Further, many enjoy watching movies with others. It’s a communal kind of thing. And that provides an opportunity to fulfill the Great Commission. In fact, its a perfectly viable road to take as you go and make disciples of all nations (Mt. 28:19 NLT). Princess Bride is an excellent witnessing tool on several levels. A couple are:
- It is a favorite movie among many people
- It is a good allegory of Jesus and the Church
Jesus, The Church, And The Song Of Solomon
Allegory is defined as a story in which the characters and events are symbols that stand for ideas about human life or for a political or historical situation. In the broader sense it is a symbol. When referring to passages in the Old Testament that find fulfillment in the New Testament theologians take a cue from the writer of Hebrews (Heb. 10:1) and call them “types” and “shadows.” One such example is the Song Of Solomon, or Song Of Songs. Early Christians understood this love poem to be a type or symbol of Christ and the Church. We also find in Princess Bride a picture of Jesus and his love for the Church. We explain it further on this episode of Finding Christ In Cinema. We’ll equip you to use the Princess Bride for sharing the Good News of what Jesus did, and how he demonstrated his love, for the bride. Just read what the Church sings:
He escorts me to the banquet hall;
it’s obvious how much he loves me.
Song Of Solomon 2:4 NLT
